Hubert E. “Hubie” Schaeffer age 62 of Jasper passed away at 7:10 P.M. Sunday September 26, 2010 at his home. He was born December 23, 1947 in Jasper to: Hubert J. and Susie Gray (Hilliard) Schaeffer.

He served in the Navy from 1966-1973. He was appointed Machinist’s Mate 3rd class, April 16, 1969 aboard the USS Tortuga (LST-26). He was a lifetime member of US 7th Fleet Amphipious Ready Group-Special Landing Forces for his dedication , discipline and vigilance exhibited while participating in victorious amphibious operations on the Da Nang River Vietnam.

He was part of the crew when they deactivated the USS Tortuga and put her into the “Mothball Fleet” January 26, 1970. He served aboard the USS Cleveland (LOD-7) from December 1970 until his discharge in May 1973. While in the Navy he received his GED and upon his discharge enrolled in Vincennes University Art and Business Management after graduation he was co-owner of a print shop in Vincennes.
He worked in a local furniture factory and body shop doing Art design.
He has done copper work and stain glass work on local churches and store fronts. He painted advertisement for League Stadium outfield.

He was very active in the AA program in Dubois County.
He loved to fish, and loved the outdoor Art forms of all kinds, loved his dog 5th Avenue,
Dancing, and loved to read. He restored a 1969 Triumph Spitfire
One of his greatest joys was creating unique pieces of wood into art.

Surviving: 2 sisters- Mrs. Harold E.(Luckie) Hopf of Jasper, and Mrs. Johnnie Dean (Ruth) Bush of Celestine.
Several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death besides his parents is 2 brothers Ralph and Clarence Schaeffer and 1 niece Danita (Bush) Hall.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday September 29, 2010 at Becher & Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.

Grave side services will be held at a later date.
