George Warren Burnett, 88, of Nevada passed away November 1, 2009 at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada, IA. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at the Nevada First Christian Church. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, IA.
George was born to R.J. (Bob) and Greta (Huddlestun) Burnett on February 23, 1921. He had four sisters and two brothers. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1938, and worked in the electrical business and on the family farm. He went to California in the early 1940s, working at Douglas Aircraft. Upon his return to Iowa, he continued to assist with the family farm and in electrical work, working for Post and Corbin prior to acquiring his electrical business in 1949. George owned Burnett Electric, working with his brothers and other employees, until 1962, when he began working at the Iowa State University Physical Plant’s electrical department until his retirement in 1984. After his ISU retirement, George worked for the Regency Home in Nevada for five years.
On June 12, 1949, George married Betty Salmon and had three sons. He was a volunteer firefighter on the Nevada Fire Department for 22 years, was a 50-year Mason, and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. George belonged to the Nevada First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, was active on the Building Committee and in assisting with ongoing church maintenance.
George is survived by his wife, Betty, of Nevada, IA; three sons and their families: Keith and Barbara Burnett of Nevada, IA, Lynn and Kim Burnett of Ames, IA, David and Wendi Burnett of Oklahoma City, OK; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two brothers.
George loved his family and friends and enjoyed their time together.
