John Whiting, 88, of Polk City, Iowa, died September 16, 2009, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines. Graveside services with Military Honors will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 3rd, at the Riverside Cemetery in Riverside, Iowa.

John was born October 31, 1920, at Washington, Iowa. He was the son of Hollis J. and Delpha (Cummings) Whiting. He attended Crawfordsville High School; joined the US Navy; and attended the University of Iowa where he earned his Civil Engineering degree. On August 3, 1946 he married Donna Whitlock. She preceded him in death, October 25, 1988. He worked for the City of Jefferson, Iowa following college and retired from the Iowa DOT where he worked as a Civil Engineer in Bridge Design.

John was a member of the Crawfordsville Presbyterian Church; a life-time member of the American Legion and VFW; a member of the Elks and a 50-year member of the Masons.

He is survived by his daughter: Christine Kirkwood of Riverside, Iowa; two grandchildren: Dina Green of Lafayette, Colorado and Chad Whiting of Bondurant, Iowa; one brother: Andrew Whiting of Ft. Worth, Texas; one sister: Mildred Mather of Springville, Iowa; and his special friend, Sandra Parmenter of Elkhart, Iowa.

Preceding him in death where his parents; wife; son Steve (John Steven); four brothers: Ernest, Robert, Arthur, Charles; and two sisters: Martha and Leona.
