Marvin Brown, 81, of Nevada, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, in Nevada. He had lived in the Story County area for 30 years.
Brown was born July 8, 1928, in Ringgold County, Iowa, to Walter Lee and Aldah Waggoner Brown. He married Leona Bucy on Dec. 24, 1949, in Benton, Iowa. The couple had four children – Judy and husband Rick Lehman, Glenwood, Iowa; Marvina Williams, Salt Lake City, Utah; Dale Brown, Nevada; and Nancy and husband Steve Qvale, Ames.
Brown’s greatest joy in retirement was being grandfather and teasing his seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was known for his good sense of humor and loved to share a good story. He also enjoyed cars and was often heard to ask: “How much do you think that car is worth?” He played baseball in his youth and was known for his prowess at batting both left and right handed. As a retired farmer, Brown loved the land and being outdoors. He also enjoyed playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, Leona; children Judy, Marvina, Dale and Nancy; four brothers, Dwain Brown, Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Randall Brown, Mount Ayr, Iowa; Arlan and wife Linda Brown, Indianola, Iowa; and Gale Brown, Neola; and three sisters, LaRetta and husband George Novak; Sharon and husband David Robison, Altoona, Iowa; and Reta and husband Larry Freihage, Ellston, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Carroll Brown, and a sister, Joy Brown.
A Memorial Service will be hosted at First Christian Church, Nevada, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. The memorial will be followed by a luncheon and opportunity to visit with the family. Burial will be on Friday, Aug. 28, in Benton, Iowa.
