David Douglas Travis, 61, Lawrence, KS, died July 3, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 7 PM Monday, July 6, 2009, at Warren McElwain Mortuary. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Maxwell Cemetery, Maxwell, IA. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell.


Mr. Travis was born December 19, 1947, in Des Moines, IA, the son of Ernest Junior and Donna Lou (Frey) Travis. Mr. Travis was a graduate of Maxwell Community High School. In 1970, he received his BBA in Accounting, Finance and Insurance from the University of Iowa. Prior to moving to Lawrence, he was the Chairman and President of Kempton State Bank & Trust, Kempton, IL. He retired in 1986. Mr. Travis married Cheryl Lynn LeRow on August 25, 2001, in Lawrence, KS. He was an Eagle Scout and a former Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 143. Mr. Travis was a volunteer fireman at Maxwell & Kempton Fire Departments. He served on the administrative board at Maxwell, Kempton & Lawrence Methodist Churches. Mr. Travis was a co-founder of the Maxwell Senior Housing, Inc., chairman of the Kempton United Methodist Church Trustees, president of Kempton Community Boosters. He was a past president of the Lawrence Lions Club. Mr. Travis was a member of Lawrence First United Methodist Church where he served on the finance committee.

Mt. Travis is survived by his, Cheryl Lynn Travis; a son, Matthew A. Travis, and his wife, Julie, Lawrence; a daughter, Tamara C. and her husband, Michael Fritchtnitch, Morris, IL; two step-sons, Jeffrey A. Shoemaker, and his wife, Dana, Eudora, KS, Kelly E. Shoemaker, and his wife, Lynn, Linnwood, KS; a step-daughter, Lori Lynn, and her husband, Byran Winfrey, Eudora, KS; his mother, Donna Lou Travis, **, two brothers, Mark S. Travis, Maxwell, IA and Wade K. Travis, Pleasant Hill, IA; nine grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
