| | | Edward C. (Christian) Larsen, 86, of Nevada, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Story County Medical Senior Care Center (formerly known as Long Term Care) in Nevada, Iowa, where he had been a resident the past four and a half years.
Edward was born on August 12, 1922 to William Anton and Evelyn Irene (Rasmussen) Larsen in Ames, Iowa. He was born, raised, and later farmed and owned the Larsen Century Farm, started by his great grandfather who imigrated from Denmark 128 years ago.`
Larsen attended and graduated high school from Milford Township Consolidated School in 1940. He then entered Iowa State University as an engineering student. After this Ed traveled to Hollywood, California with seven friends and worked at Douglas Aircraft in the engineering and drafting department. He wanted to serve his country during war time and join the Army but due to a back injury chose to help with the war effort by going to work for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. It was there he met his future wife, Vada Lucille Marcy. They were married on February 7, 1946 in Nashua, Iowa at the Little Brown Church in the Vale (Wildwood).
Ed and Vada decided to return to Iowa from her home state of Kansas and began faming with Ed’s father, William, on the family farm as well as farming additional land in the Milford Township area. While Larsen farmed two sets of land he also began working for the federal government at the National Animal Disease Laboratory (now N.A.D.C.), in the engineering department until his retirement in 1985 but continued to farm the century old farm.
Amidst his busy professional and personal life he also enjoyed belonging to a bowling league, doing public speaking as a member of Toast Masters, square dancing with his wife on Saturday nights, and belonging to the 500 Card Club and Milford Social Hour Club over the years.
Edward is preceded in death by his parents, William and Evelyn Larsen, brother Myron and sister in-law Ruth (Hauser) Larsen, sister Lucille Larsen (Randall), and brother in-law Kenneth B. Randall. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vada Larsen of Bethany Manor in Story City, and their children: Rodger (Nancy) Larsen of San Diego, California; William (Bill) and Kathy Larsen, Kasota, Minnesota; Debra (Don) Carlson of Fort Dodge, and Steve (Renee’) Larsen of Nevada. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jessica and Eric Larsen, Rianne Carlson, Chris Larsen, Kelly (Brandon) Allen, and Sydney and Connor Larsen. Ed also has three great grandchildren: Ryan Cebula, Marcus Larsen, and Emma Rose Allen, and many nieces and nephews who were an important part of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions given to the Story County Medical Senior Care Center and/or Story County Medical Center Foundation in honor of their loving care over the years.
Edward Larsen will be remembered by his family and friends as a man of honesty, fairness, and hard work, and by the many teachings he left his children. He had a wonderful sense of humor and said he did not trust anyone who didn’t enjoy reading the comics and enjoying laughter. His biggest legacy will be his wife and children and the extended family that will miss him greatly.
