| | | Ola Mae Van Arkel Holly Messmaker, 90, died March 29, 2009, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa.
Ola was born at Pella, Iowa, February 10, 1919, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Koopman) Van Arkel. After the death of her mother in 1924, she came to Prairie City to live with Aunt Jennie and Uncle Murray Ten Hagen. She graduated from Prairie City High School in 1936 and attended the Iowa School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines. She was a cosmetologist in Prairie City for 45 years. She was united in marriage to Dale J. Messmaker on March 4, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1991. Ola was a member of the Prairie City United Methodist Church; the Women’s Society and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a charter member of the T.T.T. Society at Prairie City.
Ola was excellent cook and baker and known for sharing food with neighbors, family, and those in need. One of her projects was to monthly bake cakes for Teen Challenge in Colfax. Ola believed that she was to help and encourage others; she did this by writing letters and sending notes and cards to many people.
Ola is survived by a brother: Edgar Van Arkel from Pella, Iowa; Ray Ten Hagen of Indianola, Iowa; David and Lisa Burns; Mary and Delmar Emmack and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding Ola in death were her husband, Dale; her parents; 5 brothers: Cornelius, Gerald, Joe, Robert Van Arkel; Max Ten Hagen; 1 sister: Dorothy Burns; and Aunt Jennie and Uncle Murray Ten Hagen.
Memorials may be given to Jasper County Hospice.
