| | | Marion E. Smith, 84, of Nevada, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Marion was born August 29, 1924 at Collins, Iowa, the son of Orrin and Sarah (Gilley) Smith. He graduated from Collins High School in 1942. Marion served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Dawson on January 29, 1954 at the EUB parsonage in Zearing. Marion had worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation as a draftsman in the Soil Design Department, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Nevada, and the American Legion, William F. Ball Post #48. Marion loved his family and granddaughters. He enjoyed animals, fishing, working with numbers, spending time with family and friends and feeding his pet squirrels that came to visit every day.
Marion is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Nevada; a daughter: Terry Seibert of Story City; two granddaughters: Shannon and Kristie; and two sisters: Gertrude Hunt of Nevada, and Gloria Carpenter of Nevada.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, March 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada. Interment will be in the Colo Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 pm Sunday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and to the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
