Marjorie May Gardner, 88, died March 9, 2009, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada, Iowa.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 14th, 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Maxwell. Visitation will be Friday, March 13th, at Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.

Marjorie was born at Farrar, Iowa on July 1, 1920, the daughter of George William and Eva May (Mills) Graham. Her father called her “Tommy” because of her being a “tomboy”. She graduated from Farrar High School in 1940. She played basketball and received Honorable Mention as an All-State guard. On June 21, 1940, Marjorie was united in marriage to James William Gardner at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded Marjorie in death on January 27, 1983. She was a homemaker and worked at RH Donnelley’s for many years.

She was a 52 year member of the Maxwell United Methodist Church, sang in the choir and was active in UMW; founding member of the Maxwell VFW Auxiliary; former Girl Scout leader; served the community as wife, mother and grandmother to the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department from 1950 until the time of her death. Marjorie liked to play cards; fish; garden; enjoyed ISU wrestling and golf, especially Tiger Woods. She had a sweet spirit and loved her husband, Jimmie; her family, kids and grandchildren.

Survivors include one son: Jody W. (Candis) Gardner of Maxwell; one daughter: Leota (Ted) Hudson of Maxwell; a son-in-law: Dennis Freland; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; one daughter: Billie Marie Horn on August 11, 2005; three brothers; one son-in-law: Lawrence Horn; one sister and one great-grandson.

Memorials may be given to the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department and 1st Responders.
