Dr. Robert M. Scott passed away peacefully at home on October 5, 2008, at La Costa Glen Retirement Community in Carlsbad, California. He was 95 years of age.

Dr. Scott was born in Maxwell, Iowa, on August 23, 1913. He grew up on the family farm and attended grammar and high school in his home town. Interested in livestock at an early age, Dr. Scott graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1938.

He was an exceptional high school and college athlete playing both football and baseball. He was a pitcher on his college conference champion baseball team and held several pitching records during his collegiate days.

After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Scott married his childhood sweetheart, Harriett Olinger. Over the next several years, the couple resided in Wisconsin and Illinois where Dr. Scott worked in the veterinary pharmaceutical business. In 1946, they moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Dr. Scott was to become the President and General Manager of Sioux Falls Laboratories. Later the couple lived in Indiana and New Jersey where Dr. Scott worked for Johnson and Johnson until his retirement in 1978. His wife of 42 years preceded him in death in 1982 as did his son, John, who passed away in 2007.

Dr. Scott retired and lived briefly in Arkansas and Arizona and moved several years later to La Costa Glen Retirement Community in Carlsbad, California.

Dr. Scott was active in the Masonic Lodge, Rotary, Junior Chamber of Commerce and Board of Education while in Sioux Falls. He held several U.S. patents pertaining to certain veterinary immunologic processes. He was an avid golfer and garnered two holes-in-one in his lifetime. He was known as a cheerful, gracious, industrious and generous man who loved his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, David Scott of Del Mar, California and grandchildren: Jennifer Scott of St. Paul, Minnesota; Kathleen Scott of Tempe, Arizona; Laura Knaak of Whittier, California and Michael Scott of Cardiff, California.

A graveside service with the immediate family is planned for October 11, 2008, in Maxwell, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the San Diego Hospice.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements.
