| | | Gerrit Hibma, age 85, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2009, at the Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 1:30 P.M. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Greg Timmer officiating.
Burial in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.
Visitation will be Friday, March 13, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Gerrit Hibma was born on July 3, 1923, in Hull, Iowa. He was the son of Andrew and Maggie (Huisenga) Hibma. He lived his youth in Hull, Iowa, where he attended the Christian Grade School.
He was united in marriage to Katherine DeBoer of Boyden, Iowa, on February 25, 1947. They began farming in Matlock, Iowa, and soon after moved to Sheldon, Iowa, where Gerrit farmed until he was 80 years old. Katherine passed away on August 15, 1979.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon.
Gerrit worked for many years surveying land with ASCS.
He enjoyed doing things for his children and babysitting his grandchildren. He also enjoyed building and fixing things. His family was everything to him. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports.
Gerrit also enjoyed fishing, especially going to Canada. He liked bowling with the farmers bowling league, traveling across the United States with the tour bus, baking and making fudge.
He passed away on March 9, 2009, at Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children: Joyce and John Hofland of Spokane, WA, Gary and Barb Hibma of Sheldon, IA, Sheryl Blom of Sheldon, IA; eight grandchildren; one brother: Andrew and Lois Hibma of Byron Center, MI; one sister: Caroline Krahn of Warroad, MN; three sisters-in-law: Dena Hibma of Edgerton, MN, Wilma DeBoer of Sheldon, IA, Shirley DeBoer of Sheldon, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine; son-in-law: Jerry Blom; two brothers: Pete and sister-in-law Sadie Hibma and Ted Hibma; one sister: Hilda and brother-in-law Andrew Scholten; brothers-in-law: Louis DeBoer and Simon DeBoer.
