Robert Reiste, age 88, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn.

Memorial services will be Friday, January 11, 2008, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Rev. Douglas Harding officiating.

Visitation will be prior to the Memorial Service, from 9:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan.

Robert Kenneth Reiste was born on December 23, 1919 in Altoona, Iowa. He was the only child of Kenneth J. and Harriet Beatrice (Pequignot) Reiste. Bob passed away January 2, 2008 at the age of 88 years, 10 days.

He lived his youth in Sutherland where he attended Sutherland public schools. He was active in SHS sports, music and clubs. He also wrote his first newspaper column, “Slugs by Bugs” for The Sutherland Courier. Bob often said telling his father he wanted to pursue a journalism career, instead of assuming the family funeral home business, was one of the most difficult moments of his life.

Bob attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City but after World War II started, proudly joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in September, 1943. Although his desire was to become a pilot, his eyesight was poor, so he tried to eat as many carrots as possible to qualify! The military assigned him as a radio operator until realizing Bob’s writing talents would be more useful in the base publicity operations. He was stationed in South Dakota and Missouri. He was honorably discharged in March, 1946.

A new life chapter began when Bob married Evelyn Marie Tharp on June 10, 1944 in Sheldon. They lived in Sioux Falls and Spearfish, SD. After leaving the military, Bob and Ev (with young son in tow) began a cross-country search to buy a newspaper, traveling from Iowa to California and back. They purchased The Ocheyedan Press in 1950.

Although he described himself as a country editor, Bob was always on the cutting edge of the newspaper business: He was the first Iowa weekly publisher to print color behind the newspaper flag. He started The Melvin News in July, 1959; the two publications were combined into The Press-News in 1978. He and Ev were not only partners in life but in business, also. They won dozens of newspaper awards throughout their 40-year tenure and were honored as Master Editor Publishers in 1977 by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Bob was on the INA board of directors, a founding member of Northwest Iowa Publishers, and judged many out-of-state newspaper contests.

During his life on Ocheyedan’s main street, Bob was active in the city council, commercial club, fire department, 60-year member of the local American Legion, Abu Bekr Shrine, and other local civic and school organizations. He participated in county groups, also, and served on the Selective Service board and the Osceola County School Board.

Over the years, Bob and Ev were mentors to many high school students who learned not only something about the newspaper business but also many life lessons. (“If you’re going to do something,” he said, “do it right the first time. It takes less time than doing it over again.”) They were silent partners to many who started their newspaper and business careers.

Bob enjoyed golfing, reading, dogs, traveling, and following Hawkeye sports. His love of golf was passed along to his family (whether they liked it or not) at Reiste “Rebellion” tournaments. The memories of grilled steaks, watermelon seed contests, water balloon fights, porch chats, and other fun times will be cherished by his family.

Most importantly, they were loving parents and grandparents. Robert is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son Kenneth (Barbara) of Sioux Falls, SD; daughters Kristin of Mitchell, SD; Roberta (Dennis Youde) of Maple Valley, WA and Jan (Arlyn Pedley) of Ocheyedan; grandchildren Nicolle (Bryan) Read, Shannon (Chris) Larson, Danielle (Chad) Schiernbeck, Jacquelyn Youde, John Reiste, Christina Youde, Laura Pedley and Nicholas Pedley; eight great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Dorothy Hill of Aurelia; and brother-in-law Elvin (Bud) Tharp and his wife, Lois, of Edmonds, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson, Sutton Roesch.
