| | | Emma J. Baker, 102, of 159 E. Church St., Newcomerstown, O., passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge, following a very short illness.
She was born in Germany to the late Otto and Emma (Pfuhler) Paulun on Feb. 28, 1907, and immigrated to Ohio when she was 9 months old. Her family moved north of Wolf in 1921, and she spent the remainder of her years in the Newcomerstown area.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William and John Paulun, and a sister, Ann (Paulun) Huston.
In 1929, Emma married Russell W. Baker of Stone Creek in a union which lasted over 70 years until Russell's passing on Dec. 14, 1999. In 1944, they moved into their home on Church St. Emma and Russell reared three children, Jean (Raymond) Williams of Lakeland, Fla., Richard D. (Frances) Baker of Newcomerstown and Senecaville and Russell A. (Beth) Baker of Phoenix, Ariz. The family consists of seven grandchildren, Wesley Baker of Fredericktown, Rick and Kenneth Baker of Phoenix, Ariz., Julie Bickel of Dublin, Penny Hall of Cocoa, Fla., Karen (John) Hudak of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jana (Ken) Wright of Houston, Texas. Emma also has six great-grandchildren, Justin and Jessy Bickel, Alison Hall Schubert, Kaylee and Julia Hudak, and Casey Wright; two great-great-granddaughters, Trinity and Kaylee Bickel; sister-in-law, Arlene McMillin of Stone Creek; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and a host of friends also survive her.
Emma worked outside the home in her early years, primarily cooking and pie baking. During World War II, she inspected ammunition boxes for a local manufacturer. She was very active in the Newcomerstown Senior Citizens Center and was a primary mover in the establishment of the local chapter, as well as serving in various offices and on numerous committees. Emma was queen of the county seniors for six years.
She was a longtime active member of the Parents, Adolescents and Children in the Community Together (PACCT) organization and a member of the Newcomers-town American Legion Auxiliary in honor of her two sons who were career military.
Some of her favorite pastimes were crocheting and quilting. An avid quilter, she made numerous quilts for family members. Emma's other avocations were tending to her garden flowers. She possessed a "green thumb" and her flower beds were a riot of colors and varieties.
Emma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1944 and Zion Lutheran Church of Stone Creek prior to that.
Addy Funeral Home is handling the arrangements with visiting hours on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the funeral home. Rev. Kenneth Hacker will officiate with interment at West Lawn Cemetery.
