| | | Lucille Shumate (Puffy) Brown, 87 of Narrows left this life on Thursday, April 3rd, 2003 in the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg.
A lifelong resident of Narrows, she was born July 24th, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Kelly Rowland and Nora Lee Johnson Shumate.
A graduate of Virginia Intermont College, Radford University and the University of Tennessee, Lucille spent 35 years teaching the children at Narrows High School. She retired from the school system in 1977. Being remembered and recognized by her former students was a great joy and comfort to her. She also enjoyed lunches with her friends at Anna’s Restaurant in Narrows, and serving as a member of the Giles Memorial Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where she served as a member of the official board and Christian Women’s Fellowship.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Herbert Hale (Hub) Brown; a daughter, Lucinda Brown Hale and her husband Robert; and three granddaughters, Mary Hale Crawford and her husband Brian, Kelly Hale Rice and her husband Curtis, and Nora Lee Hale, all of Narrows. She also leaves behind a lifelong friend, Jocelle Chambers Saunders.
Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, April 6th, 2003 at 2 PM at Fairview Cemetery in Narrows with Rev. Chris Michael officiating. The family will receive friends at her home at 601 Wolf Street in Narrows. The family also requests that those sending memorials please consider the Memorial Fund of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 208 Memorial Boulevard; Narrows, Virginia 24124. Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows is serving the Brown family.
