LATHAM – Dow W. Van Leuven, 94, formerly of Latham, died peacefully Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Schuyler Ridge Residential Health Care Center in Clifton Park with his family at his side. Born in Watervliet on March 10, 1915, he was the son of the late Dow B. and Mary Cleveland Van Leuven. Mr. Van Leuven attended Watervliet High School. He was a US Army Air Force veteran of World War II serving with the 8th Army Air Force, 452nd Bomb Group.
Mr. Van Leuven was a truck driver and later was employed for over 34 years by the Adirondack Steel Company in Watervliet as a pattern maker before retiring in 1980.
He was active member of the Verdoy Volunteer Fire Department in Colonie and was named Fireman of the Year in 1977. He was a member of the “Old Timers” and was a life member of the Verdoy Fire Police. He was also a member of the Niskayuna Reformed Church.
He was very athletic growing up and enjoyed ice skating and skiing. He was also very hands on and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking.
He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Ann Davis Van Leuven who died in 2004, Loving father of Gary (Mary) Van Leuven of Gansevoort, Lorinda (Bruce) Van Geenhoven of Ballston Lake, Grandfather of Valerie (Kevin Zembrzuski) Van Leuven of Clifton Park and Chad (Amanda) Van Geenhoven of Royal Oaks, MI, Great grandfather of Jack Van Geenhoven, Brother of the late Helen Van Leuven, Brother in law of Elizabeth “Lil” Ballantyne of Watervliet and Dorothy Phelps of Menands. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be Monday at 9:30 am at the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham with Rev. Scott DeBlock of the Niskayuna Reformed Church officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Memory’s Garden, Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3:00-5:30 pm.
