Ethel B. Morfitt Nirk was born to William Trester and Laura (Smith) Morfitt, on a farm near Archer, Iowa, on June 14, 1911, Flag Day. Her children grew up believing the flags, in review for Flag Day, were in honor of their mother.
Ethel lived her youth near Archer, Iowa, moving to Harris, Iowa, where she attended a country school and graduated from Harris High School, in 1930. She married her high school sweetheart, Gerald Nirk, of Harris, Iowa, on July 7, 1934, in Spencer, Iowa. Gerald and Ethel farmed in the Harris and Sheldon areas during their 51 years of married life. Gerald passed away on May 27, 1985.

She was a full time farm wife and mother. She later worked for Bogaard Cleaners doing alterations for local stores and patrons. She continued applying her sewing skills in her own home for many years after her retirement from Bogaard’s.
Ethel was instrumental in establishing education opportunities for Sheldon area special needs students. She was a driving force and fundraiser to help establish and maintain Village Northwest and Handicap Workshop.
She was honored for serving as a board member of Northwest Association for Handicapped Citizens for over 27 years.
Ethel and Gerald donated many family artifacts to the Sheldon Museum and she served as a docent for many years.
