Egbert Vietor was born on December 9, 1910, in Emden, Osfriesland. He was the son of Martin and Laura (Ohling) Vietor. He came to the United States in 1929, at the age of 19, and landed at Ellis Island, New York. He lived in Little Rock, Iowa, and Willow Lake, South Dakota, before moving to Sibley, Iowa, where he worked for area farmers, until 1938, when he started farming his own land.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Hayenga of Sibley, Iowa, on February 22, 1939, in Sibley. They lived and farmed near Sibley. Evelyn passed away in 1944.
He was united in marriage to Greta Risius of Sibley on September 1, 1959. They lived in rural Sibley until 1991, when they moved into Sibley. Greta passed away on November 1, 2003.
Egbert was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Sibley, until transferring his membership to the First Reformed Church in Sibley.
Egbert saw life very simply through his faith in God. Right and wrong were easy to separate due to his life experiences. He grew old gracefully and gave up material things gracefully. His motto for living was, if we can’t do anything about what happens to us, we have to learn to live with what the Lord has in store for us.
He passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol, South Dakota.
Those left to cherish his memories are two sons and daughters-in-law: David and Donna Vietor of Britton, SD, and their three children, Steve and wife Dinah of Amherst, SD, Lynn and husband Steven and their children, Emily, Claire and Abby of Oregon, Doug and wife Amy of Britton, SD; Jim and Marilyn Vietor of Pierre, SD, and their two children, Stephanie and her son Danny of Topeka, KS, Daniel of Rapid City, SD.
He was preceded in death by his two wives; grandson: Michael; great granddaughter: Allison; six sisters and two brothers.
