Martin P. Hoekstra, age 88, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 23, 2007, at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 26, 2007, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Greg Timmer officiating.

Burial in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 To 7:00 P.M. with the family present from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.


Martin P. Hoekstra was born on December 9, 1918, in Sheldon, Iowa. He was the son of Peter and Florence (De Boer) Hoekstra. He lived his youth in the Sheldon area, where he attended a country school and the Boyden Christian School. He served in the United States Navy where he was Chief Electrician’s Mate. He was honorably discharged.
He was united in marriage to Stella Dykstra of Perkins, Iowa, on December 9, 1948, in Hull, Iowa. They farmed near Hull and later moved to rural Sheldon, Iowa, where they farmed. In 1997, they retired and moved to town. Martin entered the Oak Park Care Center of Sheldon in 2001.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, where he had served as a deacon and was active when he was able.
Martin and Stella enjoyed traveling and visiting the children and grandchildren. He enjoyed bowling in Sheldon and Hull. He also enjoyed reading, and working in the flower garden, especially growing roses.
Martin passed away on Friday, November 23, 2007, at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Stella Hoekstra of Sheldon, IA; his six children: Philip and Linda Hoekstra of Memphis, TN, Eldon and Joan Hoekstra of Sheldon, IA, Mark and Nadine Hoekstra of Lynden, WA, Helen and Verlyn De Kam of Leota, MN, Arlys and Darwin De Jong of Sioux Falls, SD, Ruth and Ron Newhouse of Kalamazoo, MI; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Ted Hoekstra of Hull, IA, Peter and Sharon Hoekstra of Kent City, MI, Henry and Hillie Hoekstra of Hull, IA; 4 sisters: Eunice Brummel of Hull, IA, Bernice and Bert Van Maanen of Hull, IA, Florence and Ray Brunsting of Hull, IA, Dorothy and Bill Mulder of Palm Springs, CA; one sister-in-law: Margaret Hoekstra of Hull, IA.
He was preceded in death by one infant grandson: Joshua Philip Hoekstra; his parents; 3 brothers, 2 sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law.
